Mumbai to Aurangabad

January 20, 2016

We spent the night in Mumbai and the next day we took a train to Aurangabad. We bought the tickets, which we figured out all by ourselves, and off we went for a seven hour train ride. The scenery was different from the other areas we had traveled through.  More mountains and different vegetation.

At our hotel in Aurangabad we arranged to have a car and driver pick us up the next day for a three hour ride to the Ajanta caves. The Ajanta caves were dug out of the sides of a mountain between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD. Thousands of monks and artisan laborers carved temples and monasteries into the mountain side. They decorated the interior of the caves with beautiful paintings which some are still visible today. This a UNESCO world heritage site.

Huge carvings of Buddah through out the
caves.

The caves were carved over the centuries and some of the different ruling kings would pay to have a temple built for him.

The carving into the Rock was incredible. Touching such old sculptures was pretty awesome.

The pillars were carved into the rock. All one piece of stone.
